Fighting crime is not a popularity contest

Vic Barlow

CHESHIRE’S chief constable Peter Fahy certainly does not court popularity. A few months ago he condemned supermarkets and breweries for promoting cheap booze, he hit out at feckless youths and irresponsible parents, and now he speaks out against inequality within his own organisation.

Claiming that Asian and black police officers are often denied the right to promotion by whispering campaigns and insinuation will not endear him to his peers, or please his superiors, to which I say GOOD.

Mr Fahy’s style may not suit corporate fatcats, Home Office mandarins, irresponsible parents, or his political masters, but his openness and honesty is a much needed breath of fresh air.

At least we have one public figure whose opinion we can trust. He may not get everything right all the time, but no one can doubt his integrity. Someone has to have the guts to swim against the tide, whether it suits or not, and Mr Fahy should be applauded for his courage.

If he remains in Cheshire for the rest of his days, it’ll be fine by me.
