Better check your mobile phone bill from O2

A READER called me to relate the story of an order she placed for flowers. Returning from the airport with her husband in their car, she suddenly remembered a friend’s birthday.

Realising she needed to do something right away, she called 118118 from her mobile phone and asked for the telephone number of a local florist.

The operator gave the required information, then asked if she would like to be put through. She agreed and within a few seconds gave her order directly to the florist, selecting a bouquet, dictating a message and relaying the correct address.

She thought no more about it until she received her phone bill from O2 and discovered a charge of £45.25. Apparently, the cost of a call increases dramatically when you allow 118 to connect you.

"The directory enquiry cost me more than the flowers," she told me. I was reluctant to believe it until she sent me a copy of her mobile phone bill. It was true.

So, before you phone directory enquiries on your mobile, determine how much you want to spend, or pick your own flowers.

I don't understand the point of this article. When the mobile phone companies connect you from a directory enquiry call they tell you what the rate is. In fact I think that they are required to by Ofcom. So is this story about someone who chose to make a call at that price and then forgot? If it is not then bashing the phone companies for the lack of attention of one of there customers seems rather odd. What next? A story about someone who is outraged that they bought something from Marks and Spencer and were surprised when they got their credit card bill?
