‘Wedding guest’ shot in Clarksfield

A 26-YEAR-OLD man is recovering in hospital after being shot in the stomach during a confrontation involving two groups of men in Clarksfield who had earlier attended a wedding.

The local man, 26-year-old Raja Imran Iqbal, was shot at about 12.20am on Monday at Lees Road, close to the junction with Cranbrook Street.

For security reasons, police are not releasing the location of the hospital where he is being treated. He is thought to be a local businessman who had attended a wedding earlier that day and is said to be in a stable condition.

Police have played down suggestions the shooting was gang related.

Detective Inspector Chris Bridge, from Oldham CID, said: "It's extremely disturbing that such an incident involving a firearm has happened in the area and I can understand that this would cause concerns within the local community.

"This is an isolated incident and we do believe this was a targeted attack, however, we have increased patrols in the area to reassure the community. We will not tolerate gun crime and I'd like to reassure local residents that we are doing all we can to find the men responsible for this incident."

The group that made off after the shooting were Asian, in their late teens and early 20s, and wearing hoodies or balaclavas. It is believed they may also have been guests at the wedding.

Lees Road was closed from its junctions with Goss Hill Street and Cranbrook Street on Monday morning while searches of the area were carried out. Police patrols have been stepped up.

It is a disgrace to the community... Causing trouble and problems to the neighbourhood. These youngsters need to live there life and achieve something instead of going around and achieving a degree in nuisance and fighting on local streets. We need peace and silence not adults fighting like kids. They need to act there age not there shoe size.
